Fat cattle prices drop

ALL gains made last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, were taken back at the Fat Cattle Market on Wednesday. With a yarding similar to the previous sale, all categories recorded a slip in average price.
Seventy three bullocks slipped three cents to 145.2 with prices ranging from 84.2 to 162.6. One hundred and twenty nine heifers were offered and as usual they tended to make the largest move, this week it was backward by nine cents to 134, heifers ranged in price from 103.6 to 155.
One hundred and eight steers held ground as long as possible but had to back off 1.6 cents to 148.3. A good range of 102.2 to 169.6 was seen in the steer category. Six hundred and thirty vealers saw a reduction of four cents in their average price, although quality was not the major factor, with good solid pens up for sale. Vealers this week averaged 159.5 with heavy veal ranging from 104.2 to 204.2 and light 90 to 194.2. On Thursday, bullocks were the odd one out, managing to lift the average by eight cents to 142.2 and ranged from 140.6 to 150.6, although only 15 head were penned.
Forty six bulls slipped six cents to 125.6 with a few very light head among the yarding, bulls ranged from 73.6 to 148. 469 cows were hit fairly solidly, easing six cents to 108, with next to none light cows penned, they saw the range begin at 35 cents and rise to 142.
