Close shave for cancer

JOHN Van Dord has lost two friends to cancer.
Like many others in the community they inspired him as they fought brain tumours.
While he recognises Leukaemia is ‘a totally different cancer’, John said he wanted to do something to support those searching for a cure.
Next week the Kooweerup resident will shave his head to raise money for a cure.
“A couple of mates died of cancer and I was quite close to them actually,” he said. “One died a couple of years ago, the other – the same age as me, died just before Christmas.”
John takes a deep breath before going on.
“Both of them were inspirational people, great citizens and I drew strength from them and the way they dealt with the challenges they faced,” he said.“They both, John and Baz, had such an impact on the people they knew – and I wanted to do something.”
Asked about how he’d think he would handle being bald, John laughs to himself.
“I’m pretty used to being laughed at,” he said.
“The kids think it’s a bit silly – and I’ve had to convince my eight-year-old that it will grow back.”
