High in the saddle

HORSE enthusiasts are set to saddle up for the City of Casey’s annual Riding of the Bounds event this weekend.
Riding of the Bounds is a highlight on the Casey events calendar, with Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford saying each year the “much-loved tradition” attracts around 200 riders and horse-drawn vehicles.
“The event has been held in Casey’s Sister City, Berwick-Upon-Tweed in the United Kingdom, for more than 550 years and, since 1988, we have held a re-enactment of this fantastic event right here in the City of Casey,” Cr Wreford said.
The horse-riding course is around 15 kilometres and takes about two and a half hours to complete, starting and finishing at Akoonah Park in Berwick.
During the ride on Sunday 18 April, participants will inspect the boundaries of the City of Casey and Shire of Cardinia.
The event will include a barbecue lunch and an awards ceremony for categories including champion rider, mayor’s choice, best-presented group, best horse-drawn vehicle, most Australian rider and the best western turnout.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith is gearing up to take part in the event for the first time, with fellow councillors Amanda Stapledon and Geoff Ablett.
“We’ve all had a couple of riding lessons, so we’re ready to go,” he said.
Registrations for the ride start at 8am, with entry fees costing $15 for individuals, $30 for families of no more than four riders and $65 for groups with a minimum of 10 riders.
All riders must wear an Australian approved equestrian safety helmet.
