Restock market active

A LARGE variation in the quality of the cattle yarded at VLE Pakenham was presented to the regular field of buyers.
There was a shortage of pens of well finished vealers and yearlings suitable for the trade, which opened up the opportunity for feedlotters and restockers to be very active on the plainer lines.
This resulted in prices for vealers easing by two cents to five cents per kilogram for steers and up to 10 cents per kilogram cheaper for heifers.
The 550 vealers penned saw a top price for heavy B3 steers make 222 cents per kilogram.
Heavy C2 and C3 vealer steers made from 172 cents to 220 cents per kilogram to average 195 cents per kilogram to the trade.
Restockers and feedlotters were willing to pay to 195 cents per kilogram for medium weight C2 and C3 steers.
Vealer heifers made to 216 cents per kilogram for a heavy B2, with most making around 190 cents per kilogram for heavy C2 and C3 scores.
Medium weight C3 yearling steers made to 198 cents per kilogram with most being around the 190 cents per kilogram which was four cents to 15 cents per kilogram easier than last week’s rates.
Restockers and feedlotters were also very active on many of the pens that lacked finish and were a little plainer paying up to 186 cents per kilogram for medium weight C muscle score steers.
There were 200 grown steers yarded, with heavy C4 steers making from 176 cents to 185 cents per kilogram, which was firm to four cents easier than last week’s rates.
