The world of jobs and work

By Jade Lawton
About 180 students sat down for 15-minute interviews, which were followed by feedback from the panel.
The interviews are part of the Beacon Foundation program, which encourages students to sign a ‘No Dole’ charter and forge links with their community.
Beacon Foundation College ambassador Jack Mitchell said he, and other panel members, were impressed by the students.
“I think everyone walked away impressed,” he said.
“We asked why they wanted the job, and what they were interested in. We wanted to get to know the kids and there were so many great stories, terrific stories,” he said.
“All the student ambassadors were involved and Heather Southgate, the Year 10 co-ordinator, did a magnificent job getting it together.”
Mr Mitchell said the mock interviews had also helped students with their real-life work experience. Senior Sergeant Trevor Teer, of Pakenham Police, talked to students interested in joining the police force and Shanikas Viale Manager Nigel Boltwin offered work experience to a student interested in hospitality.
The interviews also prepared the students for their work experience next month.
