Break sees market return to strength

THE first sale at VLE Pakenham for two weeks saw a larger and mostly good to very good quality yarding offered.
The quality was either for condition or breeding as a lot of the plainer condition cattle were European bred or British breeds.
The sale opened with several pens of these plainer condition cattle and processors got very little look in with strong demand from feedlots and restockers.
Generally, prices were unchanged to the last sale two weeks ago, although some of the heifers and heavy steers showed rises of up to two cents per kilogram.
A lot of the supply of 430 vealers were of reasonable to good quality and made between 168 cents and 200 cents with the very best making to 228 cents per kilogram.
There were some very good quality supplementary fed yearlings penned that made to 225 cents per kilogram or a pen of steers with other steers and heifers between 185 cents and 205 cents per kilogram.
Competition was strong for all grass fattened yearlings, which saw most 415 steers make from 168 cents to 196 cents per kilogram. Reasonable to good quality heifers (455 head) sold very well making mostly between 165 cents and 187 cents per kilogram.
Plainer condition cattle sold mostly to feedlots between 165 cents and 200 cents per kilogram and the very plain cattle were from 126 cents to 158 cents per kilogram.
There was a good supply also of heavier steers and bullocks that sold to very good competition, which saw most C muscle grades make between 170 cents and 196 cents, and 700 kilogram bullocks made 193 cents per kilogram.
