Trade in strong competition for quality

MIXED results came out of the smaller penning of cattle at VLE Pakenham and although there were some grown cattle penned, most were vealers and yearlings.
Competition was very strong for a large percentage of the yarding with trade buyers competing strongly for the good quality cattle.
This included a large number of yearling heifers that were penned.
Also selling very well were the well bred cattle best suiting the feedlot fraternity.
Some sales were two cents to four cents dearer, some were unchanged, and some of the plainer condition cattle were up to four cents per kilogram cheaper.
There were 350 vealers, 820 yearlings and 100 grown cattle penned.
The best of the B muscle vealers made to 233.6 cents per kilogram for one of the best calves to be seen, while most sales were between 200 cents and 225 cents per kilogram.
Demand was also very strong for a larger supply of supplementary fed yearlings, which made from 185 cents to 222 cents per kilogram.
Prices for most of the C muscle vealers made from 176 cents to 212 cents with two pens of European breed steers to 217 cents per kilogram that were purchased to return to the paddock.
Other cattle to feed-on made mostly between 175 cents and 195 cents per kilogram. Prices for the grass fattened yearling steers were mostly between 170 cents and 196 cents, and with demand being very strong for a large number of heifers, prices ranged between 172 cents and 188 cents per kilogram.
Prices eased for the heavier steers. Feedlots and restockers picked most of the plainer condition cattle between 148 cents and 182 cents per kilogram.
Only a small number of grown steers sold between 172 cents and 183 cents, and this was six cents per kilogram lower, although there was not the number nor quality offered.
