Volatility goes into the mix

PRICE averages were all over the place at VLE Pakenham, with the similar size yarding having a lot more mixture of quality.
Prices were anywhere between unchanged and five cents per kilogram dearer, and up to seven cents per kilogram lower, and this was due mostly to quality.
All of the regular buyers were present and while they chose carefully for quality, strong demand for feeder cattle saw some good sales for plainer condition cattle too.
Prices for the best quality vealers were unchanged with B muscle calves making between 195 cents and 230 cents per kilogram.
The penning of 280 head did have some quite heavy vealers in it and these made the lower prices.
Good quality C muscle vealers were from 178 cents to 205 cents with feedlots purchasing a number of plainer calves between 170 cents and 188 cents per kilogram.
The 600 yearlings offered comprised of both grass and supplementary fed steers and heifers, but there were more plainer condition and plainer shape D muscle cattle sold.
The grain assisted yearlings made from 185 cents to 215 cents, while most grass fattened steers were from 170 cents to 194 cents per kilogram.
Better quality heifers ranged from 177 cents to 196 cents, while the plainer cattle made between 155 cents and 170 cents per kilogram for most sales.
A small supply of grown steers sold well averaging three cents higher, and made from 175 cents to 194 cents per kilogram. Similar aged heifers were from 143 cents to 160 cents per kilogram.
