Welcome rainfall sinks market sales

ALL the rain that fell within the catchment area for cattle supplying VLE Pakenham led to a much smaller yarding with livestock movement being restricted.
However, the yarding was mostly good to very good quality, and this was reflected in the prices paid.
All the regular buyers were present, and demand was strong, knowing that there will be limited supply throughout the state. Effectively prices were unchanged, but averages were higher because of the quality.
Around 160 vealers were penned, and all sold to strong competition but the strongest demand was for the lighter weight vealers 350 kilograms liveweight and lower.
The best quality B muscle vealers made between 208 cents and 232.2 cents per kilogram.
A large percentage of the cattle sold were supplementary fed, which also sold very well.
The highest price was five cents lower, although these cattle were heavier than the previous sale and made 235 cents per kilogram.
Most of the steers made between 193 cents and 215 cents, while the supplementary fed heifers made from 190 cents to 214 cents per kilogram.
The sale progressed at a fast pace with numerous pen lots of grass fattened yearlings sold.
Prices for the steers were between 188 cents and 202 cents, while heifers were from 178 cents to 194 cents per kilogram.
There were few plain condition cattle penned, and nearly all of these were purchased by feedlots or restockers.
Prices paid were from 158 cents to 205 cents per kilogram, for lighter weight one score steers.
Sales of grown cattle were solid with steers and bullocks making between 183 cents to 192 cents per kilogram. Odd sales of heifers were from 155 cents to 166 cents per kilogram.
