Young given food for thought

COCKATOO Primary School recently held a World Vision Day to teach the children about less fortunate countries.
The school has been sponsoring children through World Vision for over 10 years, and is presently sponsoring Thokozani from Malawi and Nohla from Laos.
World Vision co-ordinator and CPS prep teacher Wendy Dene said it really taught the children about the conditions children overseas were exposed to.
“We had a speaker from World Vision, who spoke to everyone in the school in groups,” Ms Dene said.
“The children dressed up in Asian or African costumes and made a gold coin donation. Teachers organised suitable activities for the kids, such as making African masks.”
Ms Dene said the feedback was excellent, and the children, especially the preps, were devastated by the news some people don’t have enough to eat.
“We had a cup of cooked rice to show some children only had that much to eat for the whole day,” Ms Dene said.
“One of the little preppies said ‘I just want to go home and buy some food and send it to them.’ They just have no idea of the conditions.”
Ms Dene said Cockatoo primary is dedicated to sponsoring World Vision children.
“We had another child come along and the school couldn’t sponsor them. The staff have decided to take him on now,” Ms Dene said.
