THE beginning of a VCE year is a nervous time but it was made a little easier for senior students at St Margaret’s School this year.
The students returned to school to finally move into their new dedicated VCE centre, which was officially opened on Friday.
Year 12 Captain Charlotte Minter unveiled a plaque and officially opened the building in the presence of the President of School Council Mary Jo Cochrane, the Chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee Mark Grove and Principal Doug Bailey.
In her speech, Ms Minter thanked the school council and the St Margaret’s School and Berwick Grammar School Buildings and Grounds staff who worked long hours over the school summer holidays to build the enormous verandah and put the finishing touches to the building ready for the new school year.
“On behalf of all the girls and staff, I want to thank to all who made it possible,” she said.
Head of senior school, Fiona Williams, said the project was a long time coming.
“We have been waiting many years for the building to become a reality,” she said.
“It took three principals to get the dream in place.”
The building houses a flexible learning space consisting of four classrooms which open up into a new VCE examination centre. The building also accommodates new staff offices and a Year 12 common room.
“It will cater perfectly for senior students,” Mrs Williams said.
“It will convert every six months into an exam centre. We will no longer have to ask younger students and parents to be quiet.”
