PRESSING grapes at D’Angelo Estate Vineyard in Officer has produced some award-winning wine.
The D’Angelo Estate 2010 Reserve Lady Chardonnay has won a gold medal at the 2013 Macquarie Group Sydney Royal Wine Show, ahead of the other 2340 wines entered by more than 300 exhibitors.
D’Angelo’s won gold for their 2010 Reserve Lady Chardonnay as well as a silver medal for the 2010 Ben’s Shiraz.
Both wines are from grapes grown on the 10-acre vineyard in Officer, where vines were first planted in 2001.
Chief winemaker and owner Benny D’Angelo said he was overwhelmed when he heard the news.
“Winning the gold medal and trophy at the 2012 Gippsland Wine Show was a great compliment to my winemaking process,” he said. “But to win another gold medal at such a prestigious show like the Sydney Royal Show is industry acknowledgement of all the hard work and dedication.”
“It’s exciting for the local community to know that we are producing affordable award winning wines at our Officer vineyard.
“It just proves that this area is not only suitable for future housing but more so for viticulture.”
The topography of Officer makes an excellent site for growing cool climate varities such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Shiraz and Viognier,

D’Angelo’s 2010 Reserve Lady Chardonnay was also runner-up last year in Australia and New Zealand Winestate Chardonnay for the Classic Oak Trophy. The 2010 D’Angelo Ben’s Shiraz also received a silver medal in the 2012 Hobart Wine Show.
