Green and gold pride shines

By RUSSELL BENNETT

FROM soccer to floorball – some of Cardinia’s brightest young sports stars are set to test themselves on the world stage.
In the past week, prodigiously talented soccer goalkeeper Ryan Scott and no less than six Pakenham floorball players have been named to Australian national teams.
Gembrook resident Scott, 17, will represent Australia as part of the under-19 schoolboys side set to tour England early in the new year.
It will cap off a busy period for the young gun – who is also a gifted wicketkeeper for the Gembrook Cricket Club’s first XI.
For two weeks next month he will also be in England on soccer commitments.
Meanwhile, six members of the all-conquering – yet self-funded – Pakenham Squishees floorball team have been named to represent Australia in the Asia Pacific Games in Wellington in late January and early February.
The tournament acts as a qualifier for the World Cup in Sweden in December next year.
Gavin and Ray Staindl, Jeremy and Ben Monckton, Brad King and Paul Hogg have all been selected to wear the Aussie green and gold.
Keep an eye on the Gazette in the coming weeks for more on these exciting sporting journeys.
