Move to get pub pumping again

PLANS to re-open Gembrook’s Ranges Hotel are a step closer after Monday night’s Cardinia Shire Council meeting.
Cr Brett Owen, who supported the motion, said the hotel was an “under-utilised” asset in town.
“The town, the residents and businesses want this hotel and motel to start operating again – there is a real feel to that view point and it would be great to see that happen.”
The hotel was described by councillors as an icon since its establishment in 1896.
Cr David Young said the re-opening of the hotel would create a “centre for the community”.
“Hotels in country towns are often the lifeblood and soul of the town,” he said.
“This hotel hasn’t been operating for some time, it’s starting to look very tired.
“The only way it can be brought back to life is if they can get their licence back and start operating as a hotel and motel, mainly the hotel part of it.”
Cr Owen said in the Gembrook Town Strategy, the hotel was described as one of the longest standing buildings and businesses in Gembrook.
Quoting the strategy, he said community feedback indicated a strong desire to see the pub restored to its former glory.
Council spokesperson Paul Dunlop said the priority for council was to encourage day visitors to stay longer in the shire.
He said the tourism strategy had highlighted the need for additional accommodation, and the council was doing all it could to support investment and business attraction in the shire.
“We are certainly looking at how we can continue to grow the tourism potential of this area,” he said.
