Employees at 28 workplaces across Cardinia Shire, including Mayor Graeme Moore, will take part in a six-week program to boost their physical activity levels by taking 420,000 steps in just six weeks.
As part of the 10,000 Steps Workplace Challenge, participants will aim to walk or run 10,000 steps each day until Friday, 31 October.
Walkers will create workplace teams to encourage one another and to compete with employees against other organisations across the Shire.
Cr Graeme Moore, who regularly swims laps at Cardinia Life aquatic and recreation centre in Pakenham, said while taking the first step to become more physically active can be hard, the rewards are worth it.
“By increasing your physical activity, you decrease your risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. It’s also a great way to boost your mental health and feel fantastic!” he said.
10,000 Steps was launched on Sunday at Lakeside in Pakenham where 57 residents ran or walked a lap of the lake.
