STUDENTS across the shire are doing their bit to commemorate servicemen and women who helped defend a country of freedom almost 100 years ago.
Together with the Pakenham RSL, schools and kindergartens in the area have been invited to remember those involved in the World War I by submitting art to the 2015 Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society Show ahead of the Anzac centenary next year.
Cardinia Primary School art students have already started their preparations by brainstorming creative ways to remember the fallen soldiers for the show, to be held on Saturday 21 March.
Pakenham RSL President Gary Elliot said young people had to engage with history to maintain the powerful, lasting legacy of Australians during World War I.
“Kids should never forget the freedom that they gave us. It needs to being maintained by young people because without their sacrifice, we wouldn’t know the freedom we do today,” he said.
Students are welcome to submit free-standing models or creative pieces up to three metres wide by 2.2 metres high.
Creative displays will be showcased at the Pakenham Hall on John Street and will be re-opened for the centenary on Saturday 25 April.
All schools and kindergartens are welcome to take part in the commemorative display. Entrants are advised to submit their works by Thursday 19 March.
Inquiries should be directed toward Anzac art co-ordinator Emma Parker on 0417 548 805.
