IT MIGHT be green around Cardinia Shire compared to much of the state right now but everything can change in just a few weeks of dry weather, Pakenham fire brigade senior station officer Dave Murdoch has stressed to local residents.
Mr Murdoch said residents must be aware of changing conditions with the Fire Danger Period beginning at 1am on Monday across the entire south-east of the state, which bans all fires in the open air without a permit.
“It’s a lot more rural here than you think,” he said.
“Travel a few minutes north and you’re in some pretty heavily forested areas.
“It’s pretty green in Cardinia but it only takes two weeks of dry weather, it can create a lot of fuel for fires.
“We’re a bit lucky here, but it won’t last. The state is not looking too good.”
Mr Murdoch said apart from a major fire at a historical property in Kooweerup on 7 and 8 November, there had been minimal fire activity recently.
“It comes in waves, but there’s been nothing major,” he said.
Mr Murdoch said residents faced fines of over $17,000 and possible jail time for lighting a fire in the open without a permit.
“Fines have increased substantially since 2009,” he said.
Barbecues and fires for cooking and warmth do not require a permit, but must be lit in properly constructed fireplaces.
The use of incinerators, chainsaws, lawn mowers, welding and grinding equipment and vehicles that come in contact with vegetation is also permitted provided conditions are followed.
CFA Assistant Chief Officer Trevor Owen said with current conditions, and vegetation already very dry across the south-east, a long and challenging fire season appeared likely.
“It’s still not too late to clean up your property if you haven’t already done so, but the window for burning off has closed,” he said.
“Residents should take up the green waste collection service offered by their local councils when preparing their properties through clearing, mowing or slashing.
“Expect any fire you start to be fully investigated by police.”
