IMAGINATION, a good sense of humour, and a drive to try something different.
That’s all you need to become a bona fide yarn bomber, according to passionate Pakenham resident Tania Lodge, who’s become a devotee of the “street art”.
While she’s been knitting for some 40 years, the mother of three took up the quirky craft earlier this year after seeing a display at a shopping centre.
“Yarn bombing is another form of street art,” she said.
“Using knitted or crotchet yarn to decorate or cover objects, such as trees, bike racks, cars, buses, tables, fences, the list is endless.
“You are only restricted by your imagination.”
Tania is a member of Yarn Corner, a yarn bombing group which has 800 members nation-wide.
“You need to be able to knit or crochet, if you can’t do either there are plenty of us around to learn from,” she said.
“If you are looking for a new social outlet and to expand your craft, this is a great avenue.
“You meet new people, there are workshops, meet and greets and projects for charity.”
It took her a month to “knit up”, and around an hour to cover the tree with a hand from a girlfriend.
But the results have been obviously eye-catching.
Her next project is a “memory yarn bomb” for a friend turning 50.
