Golfers rise extra early

PAKENHAM GOLF

ANZAC Day is a day to reflect and it was fantastic to hear how many Pakenham club members made the effort to get up extra early to attend their local dawn service and pay respect before coming out to play golf.
In the spirit of Anzac Day the club played a team’s ‘gentsomes’ event on Saturday. Gentsomes is a hybrid of individual stableford and ambrose and rewards the players that work as a team, much like our diggers 100 years ago. Frank Leontini (23), Jarrod Leontini (18), Keith Barrot (34) and George Fatorous (28) combined for a total of 102 points to win the gentsomes narrowly beating Brian Clydesdale (10), Steve Smith (10), Marcus Cameron (17) and Max Craig (18) with 101 points. Balls down the line went to 99 points.
Simon Fay (23) took out Sunday’s stableford event with 39 points from runner-up Craig Clissold (12) with 36 points.
MIDWEEK
MONDAY (20 April) was the April Mad Monday teams’ event played as an aggregate stableford. Alex Green and Les Jones proved to be a formidable pair, scoring 71 points to take the win over Frankie Chiu and Bobby Edwards on 69 points. Balls down the line went to 63 points. The year-long Mad Monday teams’ event leaderboard is starting to take shape, with Alex and Les leading the way after a win and a third place.
Wednesday (22 April) was contested by 73 players on what was a typical autumn day. Ross Maclean (18) finished his round strongly with 39 points to knock off Ron Seamer (13) on a count-back in A Grade. It was a similar story in B Grade with Trevor Knaggs (24) on 42 points holding out Alex Green (22) on count-back, however Alex did not go home empty handed, shooting an impressive 22 points on the front nine to win the Super Comp. The ball comp went down to 37 points.
LADIES
THURSDAY (23 April) the ladies played the game everyone loves to hate, foursomes stableford.
The good thing about foursomes is if you hit a bad shot, at least you don’t have to hit the next one. But unfortunately the favour is normally returned by your partner at some point during the round.
Merle Beasley and new member Carroll Beard showed everyone how it’s done, shooting a solid round of 36 points to win the day, with Liz Garvey and Kay Jones the lucky runners-up.
Ladies foursomes’ day is also an opportunity for the ladies to qualify for the Golf Victoria Doris Chambers Trophy. So with their round of 34 points Liz and Kay will now be off to the final of the Doris Chambers played at Patterson River Golf and Country Club later in the year.
This week is Ladies Charity Day with the ‘make it, grow it or bake it’ theme – donate something to be raffled off. The event will be an American foursomes’ team event, so invite a friend along to enjoy this fantastic fund raising event.
The club will also be hosting ladies’ West Gippsland Pennant on Monday, 4 May with players teeing off from 9am. As it is a home game, Pakenham do not play, but the club would love to see ladies attend to support the event.
