A PARTICULARLY special Anzac Day service was held at Lang Lang Primary School last week.
The school planted a Gallipoli oak seedling in a ceremony after the Anzac service as a memorable way to mark the Anzac centenary.
Students listened to a speech from guest speaker John Camilleri from Kooweerup RSL whose address covered both the individual story of a soldier as well as the role of women in wartime.
School captains Ruby and Daniel also spoke during the Friday service before members of the RSL assisted in laying a wreath.
The choir sang well-known songs such as Waltzing Matilda and God Save the Queen.
Following the service, students and guests moved outside for the tree-planting ceremony.
The tree was planted by a student from prep, a student from grade six and teacher Linda Sproull.
After the service, grade six students mingled with members of the RSL over afternoon tea.
The National Trust of Australia invited primary schools to apply for the tree as part of the Gallipoli Oaks Project.
More than 550 schools have been given a Gallipoli oak.
Principal Rebecca Knight said students listened attentively and were respectful throughout the ceremony.
“We had done a lot of discussion in class in the lead-up to Anzac Day so the students had an understanding of what it’s all about,” she said.
“I think they had a real appreciation for the significance of the event.”
