STUDENTS at Pakenham High School commemorated Sorry Day with the handover of an Aboriginal mosaic mural to the school library last Tuesday, 26 May.
A group of Year 12 students created the piece as part of the Maramara project, a program promoting unity among cultures.
Artist in residence Helen Harmen guided students through the artistic process to create the collaborative work entitled Djambana.
The Maramara project unites Pakenham Secondary College, the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages, artist Tara Kingson and photographer Clinton Plowman.
The school has incorporated the traditions of the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri people into its curriculum.
VCAL teacher Laura Henderson said that students overcame challenges in creating the mosaic, which they had first envisioned last year.
“They worked together and used problem solving, perseverance and communication skills throughout the project,” Henderson said.
