Veterans’ works rewarded

GREGORY Frederick Mead has been honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Mr Mead of Ventnor was honoured for his services to veterans and their families, especially his involvement with the Returned and Services League of Australia.
His involvement with the RSL has included being president of Phillip Island Sub-Branch and RSL Club 2005-2013, immediate past president, major contributor to the Memorial Garden in 2012, member since 2004 and life membership, supporter of the Bass Coast Community Foundation, annual Carols by the Bay supporter, and his involvement with Woolamai Surf Life Saving Club, Community Men’s Shed and the weekly breakfast club at Cowes Primary School.
Mr Mead’s other community roles have included committee duties at the RSL Waverley Sub-Branch and involvement in the Vietnam Veterans’ Welcome Home Parade in Sydney in 1987.
He is a past committee member of the Light Horse Field Artillery Museum Association and an honorary member since 1997.
He has an ongoing role (including founding member) with the National Vietnam Veterans’ Museum, Sub-Branch which was mentioned in the award acknowledgement.
Mr Mead is past media co-ordinator and secretary of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial Fundraising Committee and a life member since 2008.
He was also an alternate member of the Victorian Regional Committee of the Australian Vietnam War Veterans’ Trust Fund from 1989-1996.
Other roles have included president of the Melbourne Sub-Branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia in 1992; secretary, vice-president and committee member from 1988 to 1992 and Melbourne co-ordinator of the National Vietnam Veterans’ Welcome Home Parade, 1986-1987.
