Prices firm despite increased yard

Although last Wednesday’s numbers were up on the previous week, demand still managed to remain firm to stronger at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
Top end vealers lifted in price as did the middle range store types as feedlots took advantage of the extra numbers.
Some very light pens eased slightly with several restockers being the only interested parties.
Bullock numbers were up and the average weight in the bullock section was marginally lighter which eased competition, slipping the average back.
Heifers averaged lighter but demand was stronger lifting the average by eight cents and, with the interest stronger from feedlots, the steer section saw a good gain in both the top price and the average, with the average price per head $125 up on the previous week.
This week’s yard average was 283.2 cents, two cents easier.
Thirty nine bullocks topped at 310 cents, back seven cents, and averaged 266.8 cents, back 17 cents; 97 heifers topped at 310 cents, up four cents, and averaged 271.9 cents, up eight cents; 54 steers topped at 320 cents, up 10 cents, and averaged 285.3 cents, up 19 cents, and 320 vealers topped at 347.6 cents, up three cents, and averaged 291.1 cents, back two cents.
Prices were stronger on Thursday for the Bull and Cow Sale, as 34 bulls made to a top of 292.6 cents.
This was up 14 cents and the bull average was 23 cents better at 244 cents.
Good heavy well-conditioned cows gave there section a good lift with the top making to 270.6 cents, up five cents, and the 451 cows yarded averaged six cents up at 220.9 cents, with the yard average up seven cents to 223.6 cents.
