Autism walk causes a stir

FORMER Kooweerup Township secretary Geoff Stokes caused quite a stir during an innocent walk to Bayles recently.
Over the weekend, Geoff joined Environment Minister Greg Hunt for a leg of his 500 kilometre Walk for Autism.
Through donations from sponsors, Geoff’s 17-kilometre journey raised almost $1000 for charities Abacus Learning Centre and Amaze (Autism Victoria).
But it was on one of his practice walks that Geoff was mistaken for a hospital runaway.
“On one of my earlier practice walks to Bayles, I was pulled over by a four-wheel drive driven by a lady who asked if I was alright and what was my name, where did I live, etc,” he said.
“It turns out that some resident along the way had spotted me walking, and had telephoned the Kooweerup hospital to tell them that one of their patients, ‘an old bloke,’ had escaped and was on his way to goodness knows where via Bayles!”
