CARDINIA Highway Patrol has partnered with the TAC to target unsafe driving on local roads.
The patrol has received funding from the Transport Accident Commission to implement ‘Operation Bunbury’- a program that will target speed and distraction offences on local roads.
Sergeant Allen Inderwisch of Cardinia Highway Patrol said it was a “real win” to have the TAC on board.
“We take road trauma reduction extremely seriously and any measure that we can take is definitely a positive,” he said.
“People should be aware that there will be zero tolerance for drivers caught doing the wrong thing.”
The funding is being used to roster on extra patrol shifts, allowing the unit to catch more dangerous drivers.
He also welcomed the partnership between with the TAC.
“We’ve got a strong working relationship and it’s important that we’re able to work together.”
Sergeant Inderwisch said the first three additional shifts had seen 81 drivers caught out for offences including exceeding the speed limit, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone and driving an unregistered vehicle.
“We will be out in both marked and unmarked cars, doing routine checks and looking out for unsafe behaviour.
“As long as people continue to flout the law, we’ll continue to pick them up. So far the program has been extremely successful in catching out unsafe driving.”
The operation started at the end of July and will continue until further notice.
