Prices slow to gain

With demand for good quality cattle still remaining strong, extra numbers were delivered for the Wednesday fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange.
The secondary section continues to struggle although prices in this area tend to creep up among pen lots as restockers and feedlots compete for supplies.
Bullocks remained firm, with the vealer section lifting, the heifer and steer sections eased on the back of lighter quality.
The yard average was eight cents easier at 286.5 cents.
Twenty one bullocks made to 320 cents, firm and averaged 295.7 cents, firm.
Seventy three heifers made to 320 cents, up 10 cents, and averaged 259 cents, back three cents.
Seventy five steers made to 320 cents, back five cents, and averaged 284.1 cents, back 16 cents.
One hundred and forty nine veal made to 358.2 cents, back two cents, and averaged 303.7 cents, up two cents.
On Thursday there were a few less cows penned but demand remained strong with 473 cows topping at 283.6 cents to average 17 cents dearer at 223.5 cents.
A larger percentage of beef cows and heavier condition in the dairy section were contributing factors.
Twenty three bulls penned made to 335.6 cents, up five cents on last week, some lighter bulls eased in price to pull the average back eight cents to 273.9 cents.
Twenty bullocks topped at 319.2 cents to average 290.1 cents and the yard average for Thursday was up 20 cents to 229.1 cents.
