RESIDENTS have been encouraged to propose ideas for community-led projects within the Cardinia Lakes community as part of The Neighbourhood Project.
Cardinia Shire Council was selected as one of three metropolitan councils to participate in the project that gives residents the opportunity to shape community initiatives and create public spaces.
After its launch last month residents, businesses and community groups have been encouraged to think about their neighbourhood and complete the statement: ‘I love Cardinia Lakes but I’d like to see …’
Once the submissions have been considered, the council will hold a workshop to determine the three best community ideas, aiming to support residents with the material required to have three community ideas off the ground by February.
Example ideas include introducing a new market or festival, launching a working bee or planting vegetables on vacant land.
The most popular ideas pitched so far include a community garden, outdoor cinema by the lake, basketball court and a pedestrian crossing between Coles and Windermere Boulevard.
“The Neighbourhood Project will help us to lead positive and long-term change in our shire to enhance the well-being of all our residents, and create more connected, healthy and safe communities,” Cr Owen said.
“This is a unique opportunity to empower our community to take an active role in shaping our public spaces and support the development of a strong sense of belonging for all members of our diverse and growing community.”
Ideas can be pitched online by Friday 9 September and residents have the ability to vote for or against other submissions. For more information, visit The Neighbourhood Project Cardinia Lakes Facebook page or theneighbourhoodproject.org/cardinialakes.
