THE Emerald and Berwick communities will have the opportunity to snap up some bargains during this year’s Garage Sale Trail.
Now in its sixth year, the sustainability Garage Sale Trail is a national initiative that sees thousands of Australians hold a garage sale on the one day, promoting reusing and recycling.
Emerald resident Anica Bowes said taking part in the event on Saturday 22 October was a great way to downsize.
“My father recently passed away and everything is doubled up,” she said.
“I’ve got too many things to just sell on eBay and I thought a garage sale would be a great way to recycle things I no longer need or use because I don’t have space for storage.
“There’ll be genuine and unique items for sale including my dad’s piano accordion that is over 50 years old.
“I’ll have 300 to 500 items on sale and there’s something for everyone.”
Other items include an ergonomic desk, wireless surveillance monitor, furniture, beauty products, Emerald primary and secondary school uniforms, walker with a trolley and seat and exercise equipment.
“I’ve also thrown in a trampoline because my daughter’s 19 now and we don’t use it anymore,” Ms Bowes said.
“I’m prepared to give that one away for free because I’ll be happy to get rid of it.”
Ms Bowes’ garage sale will be held from 8am to 4pm on 9 Florence Avenue, opposite 12 Florence Avenue.
A separate Garage Sale Trail event will be held in Berwick from 9am to 3pm at Shed E, Cardinia Street, with a range of tools, household items and antiques on sale. A sausage sizzle and egg and bacon rolls will also be available.
“At a time where we’re more isolated than ever, events such as Garage Sale Trail that bring communities together can have significant social outcomes,” event co-founder Andrew Valder said.
“Holding a garage sale and getting to know your neighbours means that you’re contributing to a connected community that’s healthier, happier and even more prosperous.”
