LADIES looked their best, dressed in bright frocks and colourful fascinators for the Inner Wheel Club of Berwick’s final Oaks Day luncheon at the iconic Clover Cottage.
Raising more than $4500 towards St John of God Hospital’s oncology centre, the day was filled with excitement as ladies took part in sweeps during the horse races and enjoyed a delicious three-course meal.
Inner Wheel Club past district chairman Kay Rankin said this year’s event again featured the Dodgy Brothers, comprised of husbands of Inner Wheel members who managed the betting for each race.
“These long-suffering men have been the mainstay of the event since its inception and the ladies are most grateful for the authenticity and generosity of their time that they bring to the event,” Ms Rankin said.
“Over 130 ladies looked resplendent in their stunning outfits with gorgeous hats and dazzling accessories.
“Sharon Zappa’s beautiful outfit was judged the best with Diana Nutter’s striking hat taking first prize in that category.“
St John of God Berwick chief Lisa Norman said the Berwick Inner Wheel remains the hospital’s top financial donor to its wig library service.
It currently has more than 130 wigs and continues to grow.
“A cancer diagnosis rocks your world, often requires surgery, multiple specialists, and then chemotherapy and radiotherapy takes an additional toll on the patient and their support team,” Ms Norman said.
“Our clients are often in a vulnerable place – financially, emotionally and physically.
“We’ve seen the positive impact our wig service can have on our patients.
“We’ve had a school girl who was confident being bald but didn’t like everyone always pointing at her while she was at school.
“For her, having a wig made an enormous difference. It made her feel normal in the school environment.
“I believe that when the patient feels more happy and positive, the body is more open to the treatment and the journey ahead.”
Berwick Inner Wheel president Vicki Collier thanked the organising committee and members of the club with special thanks to Pat McCurdy and Helen Lay who co-ordinated the event for the third year in a row.
The club is yet to secure a new venue for next year’s Oaks Days event.
