PAKENHAM students have been nominated for a VCAL award after their leadership during the crafting of a wood-fired pizza oven to be enjoyed by the whole school community.
This year the Education Centre Gippsland community college’s Pakenham campus introduced a new work-related skills project which engaged students in building and construction.
Students Alex Harper and Brendan Catheray-Lunson have been nominated for the VCAL Work Related Skills team award after their leadership exhibited throughout the project.
Teacher Eamon Hatley-Smith said the aim was to build a pizza oven with a unique chimney and dome-roof structure.
Mr Hatley-Smith said the project had not been without its hurdles.
One of the more complex aspects of the build was the construction of the dome-shaped frame, but he said the students rose to the challenge.
“Alex and Brendan engaged in discussions, planning, used technology and worked hard throughout the entire process. They applied considerable effort to ensure a successful conclusion,” he said.
“They discussed issues of location and materials for the oven. After developing a clear understanding of the expectations for building they then considered personal protection equipment for safe work. They viewed and tested this equipment which consisted of gloves, eye protection, breathing protection and hearing protection.
“They then used a variety of tools after instruction, to measure and cut timber. Both boys also completed the preparation and pouring of concrete for a solid foundation to the pizza oven and they showed very good quality work while meeting timeframes.
“Both boys quickly developed skills and knowledge to lay bricks, check levels and mix mortar. They worked very well together and with other students in the process.”
