THIS year’s Cardinia Community Christmas lunch could be the last one, according to volunteers.
Event co-ordinator Sue Johns said that after about a decade of organising free lunches on Sunday 25 December for disadvantaged residents in the region, the future of the event was now uncertain.
“I think this year might be the last one,” she said.
“This year there have been many unexpected hiccups.
“What begins in early April and extends through to Christmas Day itself is becoming somewhat of a drama as there seem to be some who want to be more of a ‘Grinch’ when it comes to offering assistance to an event that doesn’t cost very much but benefits our most needy in the community.
“There are many who are unable to celebrate Christmas. It might be for financial or family reasons, other hardship, or being away from home. But this has always been an event where the community can enjoy the company of many on Christmas Day.
“Served up on the day are all the normal Christmas meal specialities: beef, turkey, ham, potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, peas and corn, as well as plum pudding, a fresh fruit salad, pavlovas and even cake to take home.”
Presents will also be available for each attendee, distributed by Santa.
Last year about 150 people gathered at Pakenham Hall to enjoy a free lunch and Ms Johns expects that this year will be even bigger than the last.
The Cardinia Community Christmas lunch is from 11.30am to 3pm at Pakenham Public Hall beside the library. Registrations are essential and due by Friday 16 December.
