Nearly 50 Australian women every day will be told they have breast cancer.
According to Cancer Australia, this year it’s estimated that the risk of an individual being diagnosed with breast cancer by their 85th birthday will be one in 14 – one in 715 males, and one in eight females.
On Saturday 8 July, local Big V basketball outfit the Pakenham Warriors will hold their own ‘Pink Sports Day’ at Cardinia Life to raise some much-needed funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).
The initial push for the event was the news that Lisa Pollard, the 33-year-old sister of Warriors Youth League Division 2 Women’s head coach Darren Thomas, had just been diagnosed with breast cancer.
On 8 July, the Warriors will be ‘pinking up’ to show their support for, and pay tribute to, people in the local community who have been affected by breast cancer, while raising funds and awareness for BCNA.
As the Warriors start to count down to their Triple Header Pink Sports Day, they’re inviting their biggest fans to cheer them on and to dig deep to help reach raise some much needed funds.
Donations will go directly to BCNA to help ensure Australians affected by breast cancer are provided with the very best support, information, treatment and care appropriate to their individual needs.
Given that every dollar counts, the Warriors are urging local fans to help make a difference by making a secure online donation, big or small.
The Pink Sports Day will kick off at 4pm with the Warriors’ Youth League Women’s team taking to the court to battle the Western Port Steelers.
The Youth League Men’s team will then take on the Wallan Panthers at 6pm, followed by the senior men looking to defend their home court – also against Wallan.
There will be door prizes, ‘Best Dressed in Pink’, and half-time competitions along with a raffle, which at this stage has a major prize of a 12-month gym membership, valued at $845.
Monetary donations towards the event can be made via the fundraising page at https://pinksportsday.gofundraise.com.au/page/AshJensen.
Donors will automatically receive a tax-deductible receipt via email.
The local businesses and individuals who have already pledged their support for the event include Cardinia Life, Ash Mason of Stockdale & Leggo Pakenham, Pakenham Optical, and Citrus Graphics.
