There were delays inbound on the Monash on 2 February – but not for the reason you’d expect.
The commotion was caused by motorists who had slowed and pulled over to take a peek at an enormous AGL Generator, which had stopped over near the Officer BP truck stop on route to Port Melbourne for repairs in Germany.
The entire load, which was being carted by four prime movers, measured more than 100 metres from end to end – bigger than an Airbus A380, or longer than two Olympic sizes swimming pools.
It weighed in excess of 650 tonnes, or as much as much as 130 elephants.
Quite the crowd gathered to inspect and take photos of the heavy load, which had travelled overnight at a speed of 20km/h from the Loy Yang A Power Station in Traralgon.
“It’s quite exciting – something different. I’ve never seen anything like it,” one spectator told the Gazette.
Security was stationed at the generator for the day, before the load was scheduled to continue its journey to Webb Dock on Friday and Saturday nights.
To allow for the four-day journey, which strictly took place overnight to minimise traffic disruptions, VicRoads had closed local roads and removed traffic lights and signs to enable the load to get past.
