Prospective pet owners in Pakenham are being urged to consider adopting a pet rather than purchasing from a breeder or pet shop.

A number of local animal rescue organisations are gearing up for National Pet Adoption Day on Saturday 15 February, an initiative led by PetRescue in conjunction with PETstock Assist.

Olympian and television personality Giaan Rooney is fronting the adoption day campaign and is urging Australians to adopt different in 2020, by adopting a new way of thinking when it comes to animal adoption.

“I honestly believe every rescued animal knows it has been lucky to find its forever home and they know they have been given a second chance at a happy life,” she said.

“For owners, adoption means families can find the perfect fit for them – the rescue group can provide an overview of the animal’s behaviour and personality so you know exactly what you’re getting.”

The past five pet adoption days have found homes for nearly 3000 animals across Australia, with the 2020 target to re-home 1000 pets.

PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy said she has seen firsthand the incredible bonds that can be formed when prospective owners open their mind and adopt different.

“A lot of people start their search for a new pet with a certain type, breed or age in mind, however your perfect match might not be the pet you think,” she said.

“If you have your hands full with kids, an older, more settled dog or cat may be a far better fit than a young, energetic puppy.”

RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker echoed a similar sentiment and said adopting a pet provides a second chance for an animal that requires a loving home.

“Buying a dog from a breeder can cost thousands of dollars – adoption is just a fraction of that price and includes your new pet being health and behaviour checked, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and up to date with flea and worm treatments,” Dr Walker said.

“By adopting a dog, you are reducing the demand for puppy farms and backyard breeders where animals live in appalling conditions and are treated inhumanely.

“By choosing to adopt, you’re essentially saving the lives of vulnerable animals.”

Pakenham’s National Pet Adoption Day will be held from 10am to 2pm at 55 Bald Hill Road.
