Eligible Cardinia residents are being offered a rebate on their general rates amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Cardinia Shire Council have introduced the Covid-19 partial rates rebate in the budget proposed for 2020-21.

Upon budget approval on Monday 25 May, a partial rebate of $50 on general rates for the 2020-21 rating year will be available to owners and ratepayers of residential properties who hold a Commonwealth Health Care Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health.

An extension of due dates for all outstanding rates to 30 June is also included in the budget.

No interest will be charged on any overdue rates instalment amounts to 30 September but council’s normal Financial Hardship Guidelines will be applied on any debt still outstanding on 1 October.

All ratepayers who receive a partial rate rebate will also be eligible to access a payment plan, if chosen to do so.

“Council is very aware of the impact Covid-19 is having on our community,” Cr Leticia Wilmot said.

“The Covid-19 global pandemic and the state and federal restrictions has led to a significant loss of employment and closure of business.

“This will cause considerable financial stress for a large number of our community and council has a responsibility to provide assistance.”

However, the rebate does not apply to ratepayers who hold an eligible Pensioner Concession Card.

“As a community we’re living in unprecedented times and council unfortunately is not immune to these every-changing circumstances in the community,” Cr Michael Schilling added.

“We will have residents who will be unable to afford their rates and as an organisation we have to have the right policies in place to exercise a degree of compassion and understanding.

“For me, it’s important that this budget is compassionate, yet responsible at the same time.”

There will be no community consultation or communication in relation to the proposed COVID-19 partial rates rebate.
