Local kids and parents are in store for a special treat, as a new ’Bunyip’ themed book is coming to town.

A light-hearted tale filled with “silliness“ and laughter, the illustrated children’s book ’Blimey There’s a Bunyip!’ is one that’s sure to get youngsters reading and reimagining the mythical creature in a fun and humorous way.

For first time author, Veronica Ferguson Perez, this book is all about bringing a smile to peoples’ faces, both young and old – especially in these trying times.

“’Blimey There’s a Bunyip!’ is just that – a silly story with one intention – to be laugh-out-loud funny for everyone who reads it,“ Ms Ferguson Perez said.

“Our mischievous bunyip visits an unsuspecting family, only to find himself stuck in their toilet.

“The whacky ways they try to remove him just cause more hilarious chaos – and that’s basically the storyline,“ she said.

“Nothing deep and meaningful, but a lot of very clever illustrations and a lot of silliness that also includes a boy, a shark, a blue dog, a bunyip that likes jelly and jam, and the odd giant slingshot!“

Ms Ferguson Perez said she was inspired to write her first kids book during the global pandemic, as she felt like everyone could do with a bit more fun and laughter – and what better way than through an imaginative story.

“I trained in counselling and social work and am all for a good ‘message’ or lesson in books – but with everything that is going on in the world today it’s important not to forget the simple power of play, silliness and laughter,“ she said.

Ms Ferguson Perez is self publishing this book and it is set to be launched later this year, and she is already planning some new adventures and sequels for her fun-loving bunyip character.

She will also be doing a virtual reading of her book for the children at Bunyip Primary School after its release, who will get a few copies to enjoy for years to come.
