Beaconsfield traffic holdup

Beaconsfield commuters say they are feeling trapped in their homes due to congestion on the Princes Highway at peak hours.

Getting in and out of Woods Street and Stella Street as well as the supermarket complex is near impossible, says Beaconsfield local Gloria Vanes.

“It’s not every day but most days around peak hours the traffic is so heavy you can’t get out on the main highway,” she said.

“There’s been several times I’ve just turned around to go home and tried again later because it’s banked up straight through the town.

“You may get a person who is polite who will let you in but you take your life in your hands because you have to go halfway out to see. It’s risky and it’s like we’re trapped.”

Ms Vanes is calling for keep clear road signs to be painted onto the highway at key intersections throughout Beaconsfield to help locals on their daily journeys.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin has started a petition to the State Government to call for action.

“Locals know the heavy congestion on this stretch of the road, and this simple measure will ensure residents can safely turn right out of their road,” Mr Battin said.

“Commuters have expressed how often they have felt unsafe during peak times and believe the extra space created by ‘Keep Clear’ signs will mean they will be able to more safely enter and exit their road.

“We are calling on the State Government to come out with a tin of white paint to install ‘Keep Clear’ signs at both intersections- this is a simple cost-effective solution that will create a huge difference for locals and make these intersections safer.”
