Three Berwick students with a passion for politics were given the chance to participate in a tour of Parliament House, led by Gembrook MP Brad Battin.

Brothers Luka and Ethan with their friend Kristian were shown where democracy takes place on Monday 4 July.

“I honestly really like politics, it takes you to a lot of different places,” Luka said.

“Brad was really knowledgeable and showed as all around Parliament House – we got to see how it all unfolds.”

Ethan said it was an “awesome experience”.

“I really liked the Lower House and I even got to sit in Matthew Guy’s seat (Victorian opposition leader).

Luka’s mum Kristy Salopek said it was a worthwhile experience.

“They were mesmerised and there was so much to see,” she said.

“I hadn’t been there before and there’s a lot of history in those buildings – the kids loved it and I think all schools should take part in a tour.”

Mr Battin said he was happy to play the role of tour guide for the day.

“These kids came to us and they really have an interest in politics, which is great at that age and isn’t very common,” Mr Battin said.

The boys were led through the Legislative Council Chamber and the Legislative Assembly Chamber, Queen’s Hall, the Liberal Party room and even the building’s old jail cell.

A standout was the 24-carat gold leaf used to adorn the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers, which can still be seen on the walls and ceilings today and is worth about $7 million.

Mr Battin shared how legislation goes through parliament, where certain Members sit and how to become a Member of Parliament.

He said he was happy to facilitate tours of parliament for potential future leaders.

“I’ll have to watch out one day,” he joked.

“Every time I go on a tour of parliament, I learn something new myself – there’s so much to do and I encourage everyone to look through this beautiful building.”
