‘Senior-tivity’ Day at Men’s Shed

The Cardinia Men's Shed is hosting Senior-tivity Day.

The Cardinia Men’s Shed is building a free event for local seniors – Seniortivity Day.

Supported by the Cardinia Shire Council and Pakenham Living and Learning Centre, the event is a chance to meet and talk with members of local community groups in Cardinia.

About 12 different community groups – such asknitting and walking groups – have signed up for the event, and many more are invited to get involved.

Cardinia Men’s Shed vice-president Roger Barnett said the event was designed to encourage older citizens to get involved with their local community.

“There’s a lot done for young people in Cardinia Shire and not so much done for older people, and since we’ve had Covid-19, a lot of the older people aren’t getting back out and involved with groups again,” Mr Barnett said.

“Our organisation has lost about 30 per cent of members over the pandemic and it’s been difficult encouraging people back out.

“We’re looking to build memberships with some of the groups taking part.”

A Parade of Nations is set to celebrate cultural diversity across the shire along with a national dress competition.

“We have a wide cultural community and I’ve been to local events and seen some of the wonderful clothing from different backgrounds and we’re encouraging people to take part,” Mr Barnett said.

“Different nationalities have a lot to contribute and the Men’s Shed really wants to encourage people from different cultural communities to get involved in our group as well as others.”

A range of free food will be on offer with a Men’s Shed sausage sizzle running from 8.30am to 9.30am, Indian food will be available from 12pm to 1.30pm and the Women’s Friendship Cafe will provide tea, coffee, cakes and sandwiches throughout the day.

Lots of prizes will be up for grabs including a wheelbarrow full of prizes. Raffle tickets cost $2.

Bunnings potted plants will be given away for free but only while stocks last.

Many local businesses have agreed to generously donate prizes for the event.

“We hope everyone gets behind it comes along and enjoy themselves, they might meet a group that they decide they want to join,” Mr Barnett said.

Seniortivity Day will be held on Saturday 1 October from 9am to 4pm at the Pakenham Living and Learning Centre, 6B Henry Street, Pakenham.

Those interested in showcasing their cultural dress are encouraged to phone the Cardinia Men’s Shed on 5941 2389.
