The Liberals and Nationals say they will continue the important work started by the Lang Lang community by committing $1 million to help Cardinia Shire Council complete planning works for the Lang Lang Bypass.

Sand extraction in Lang Lang is set to significantly increase in the coming years, meaning an influx of trucks on local roads and concerningly, over 350 of them travelling down Lang Lang’s main street every day, the Coalition said.

The local council has sought to ease community concerns and has begun designing a bypass road to ensure trucks are diverted from these local roads, and the amenity and safety of the town is preserved.

Working with the community and the council, the Liberals and Nationals will provide $1 million to finalise these initial plans.

Shadow Minister for Roads, Danny O’Brien, said the new road would keep heavy duty trucks out of the town’s centre.

“This road will ensure pedestrian safety is not compromised and will prevent the noise, dust and fumes from trucks using the small town roads that were never designed to carry such heavy vehicles.”

Liberal candidate for Bass Aaron Brown said locals were concerned they would be left behind when the trucks arrive.

“The Liberals and Nationals will listen and will give the community the confidence it needs now and into the future,” he said.

The Nationals candidate for Bass Brett Tessari said this was an important first step in delivering the bypass.

“Through community consultation, these plans will determine the best design and route to keep trucks off Lang Lang’s main street.”
