Up and down week for Waters

CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS REPORT

MIDWEEK PENNANT

Cardinia Waters recorded a win and a loss from its two games last Tuesday.

Its division two side travelled to Edithvale to play the league leaders.

It wasn’t a good day for the village top side as they lost all three rinks by a combined 19 shots. Edithvale appear to be the benchmark side this season, and are always a danger on their home green. Bryan Stephen’s rink was the closest and after leading 11-4 after 11 ends, they stumbled over the last 10 ends to lose by two shots.

Cardinia Waters’ side-one sits in fifth place on the ladder and play away again this week at Churchill Waverley Golf Club.

Side two, however, defeated Dandenong Club at home, winning all three rinks by a total of 18 shots. This village side are playing well in the early part of the season.

The rink of Tom Gogan, Jenny Edmonds, Michele Bondfield and Alan Copley were the best performed, winning by 13 shots. Had they not dropped a five on one end their winning margin could have been greater.

Other winners were Stuart Tokely (skip), Marie Stephenson, Graeme Taylor and Jenny Cole who, despite losing on ends, won by six shots up. The third winning rink was Len Judge (skip), John Carr, Peter Mitchell and George Birnie who just scraped home by one shot.

Side two are happily positioned on top of the ladder 11 points clear of Dandenong RSL.

SATURDAY PENNANT

Saturday Pennant was similar to midweek with the villagers winning one game and losing the other. At home, side won lost an epic struggle against Berwick. The ‘Wickers’ are always competitive and played well winning three of the four rinks by a combined 15 shots.

At afternoon tea Berwick led by 11 shots, and maintained the pressure to ensure victory.

The one winning Cardinia Waters rink was skipped by Phil Wynd. He played with Ashley Graham, Mick Knight and Robert Mitchell. They won by six shots in a tough encounter.

Side one fill fifth spot on the ladder, still in touch, but must get back in the winning list to play finals. Next Saturday they play Hampton Park away.

Side two travelled to Clayton Bowling Club to play the cellar dwellers. Again playing on unfamiliar grass the village players had a very successful day winning all three rinks by a massive 43 shots.

One rink had an outstanding result winning by a whopping 34 shots – congratulations go to Tom Gogan who is in sparkling form, ably assisted by Stuart Tokely, Peter Mitchell and Jenny Cole.

The other winning rinks were: Jim Barrie, John Carr, Terry Nye and Alan Copley who won by five shots. Just surviving by two shots were Marie Stephenson, Graeme Taylor, Brian Byrne and Ian Smith.

This Cardinia Waters side is holding down fourth spot on the ladder in a close affair, and next week are at home to Mordialloc who are one spot above them on the ladder by three points. Get ready for a crackerjack event.
