Shining light flickers against the best

Showing his prowess with a bowling arm on Saturday is Cardinia Waters’ bowler Brian Byrne.

CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

Midweek Pennant

Side one faced the best team in their competition, in the form of Dandenong Club last Tuesday.

The all-powerful, highly skilled and tough players from Dandenong were and still are section leaders, after they comprehensively beat Cardinia Waters at their indoor Dandenong green.

The only bright light for the village team was the performance of Ray Naylor’s rink which managed to gain a draw against their opposition.

They were two shots up before the last end and with the last bowl the Dandenong skip held two shots, but just failed to get the third shot in that was necessary to win.

A very big sigh of relief was heard from Ray’s team of Dennis Patmore, Graeme Taylor and Simon Koning as the result was declared by the thirds.

Next week this side will be somewhat back to full strength, and will be looking forward to regrouping, and taking on Edithvale at home. These two teams have both won three from nine games, so the result may be close.

So while the ones were having a tough day, the two’s had a ‘battle royal’ of a game also.

They played Willow Lodge at home in what I termed “the battle of the retirement villages”!

These two teams were neck-and-neck, and the winner was always going to edge higher on the ladder.

By just sneaking in, to win two rinks by small margins and drawing the other, Cardinia Waters received 15 points to retake second place on the ladder. This relegated the ‘Lodgers’ back to third place. On top are Dandenong RSL Rec a bare one point ahead of Cardinia Waters.

Best winning rink was skipped by Tom Gogan, and he played with Jenny Edmonds, Brian Byrne and Terry Nye who won by five shots. Just sneaking in by one point was Len Judge (skip), John Carr, Peter Mitchell and Alan Copley. The rink that tied was Stuart Tokely, Marie Stephenson, Ian Kennedy and Jenny Cole.

Next week the villagers play Dandenong Club away. They are in fifth spot on the ladder, but are known to like their home green.

Saturday Pennant

Cardinia Waters side one travelled to Narre Warren to try out the new undercover rinks recently built by the Casey Council for the Bowling Club, near Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.

The excellent building job done is a credit to the club and shire alike, and will put lawn bowls front and centre in the sporting precinct.

Cardinia Waters were keen to take a win off the home team, but just weren’t good enough on the day.

They managed to win two rinks by small margins, but with one of the other rinks losing by 27 shots the job was nigh impossible.

The best winning rink was John Van Vugt (skip), Ray Naylor, Jim Smith and Donny Gibson who won 23/21. Also just sneaking in was Keith Lewis (skip), Jill Naylor, Graeme Taylor and Bill Tippelt who won 18/17.

Although not actually winning the day, the four points gleaned from Narre Warren puts Cardinia Waters up one spot on the ladder where they now sit in fifth spot just ahead of Chelsea.

Next week they play Berwick away.

Back at home Cardinia Waters side two faced off with Highett.

The two sides were almost equal on the ladder, and a good close game was expected, which is what took place, at least up to the afternoon tea break.

At the break Cardinia Waters held a five shot lead, which quickly evaporated once play resumed. Highett then outplayed the home team winning on all three rinks and ending up with a 17-shot buffer.

Cardinia Waters side two are now fourth on the ladder, and next week play Clayton at home.
