CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS

Midweek Report

Cardinia Waters side one was at home to Edithvale last Tuesday and needed a win to stay off the bottom two spots on the ladder which could lead to relegation.

Edithvale are a handy team, made up by a predominance of lady bowlers and earlier in round three gave Cardinia Waters a thumping at Edithvale. This time the roles were reversed, and playing on home turf, the village side won two rinks and 11 shots up to claim 14 points.

Best winning rinks was skipped by Ray Naylor, and included Mick Knight, Graeme Taylor and Jill Naylor. Their winning score was 12 shots up, and in an unusual circumstance one end was called a ‘no score’, after the umpire couldn’t separate two opposing bowls which were both touching the Jack.

Also winning was the rink of John Van Vugt (skip), Bill Hite, Dennis Patmore and Simon Koning.

They won by six shots up.

The ones still reside on sixth position on the ladder, and with four games to play are keen to at least stay there.

Next week they play Churchill Waverley Golf Club at home, who are one spot below.

Side two, in division four, played Dandenong on their Heatherton Road indoor green.

As expected, Dandenong were just too powerful for the ‘villagers’ and won all three rinks for a total of 19 shots up.

One rink did give a yelp though, almost causing an upset by just losing by two shots after leading into the last end.

Despite the loss, this side still remains in third position on the ladder, just one point below Willow Lodge. Both these teams are now well behind the leader Dandenong RSL.

Like the ones, they play Churchill Waverley Golf next week. This game is at the Rowville green.

Saturday Pennant

Side one played second placed Berwick on their grass green, and were unsuccessful although they did salvage two points with a one-shot win to John Van Vugt’s rink, which includes Bill Hite, Del Dance and Donny Gibson.

The other three rinks all lost by five shots, and the final result was a 14-shot loss.

Despite the loss they still valiantly hang on to sixth ladder position ahead of Chelsea and Pakenham. Interestingly Pakenham gave Chelsea a decent flogging in their match in the Lions’ den.

Side one face leaders Hampton Park at home next Saturday in a crucial match with only three rounds left before the finals. They have no hope of playing finals and their first need is to avoid relegation. The other two games for the year are Cranbourne at home and Chelsea away.

Playing at home, side two gave Clayton a bowling lesson with a 95/39 shellacking with all three rinks winning substantially.

Stuart Tokely’s rink got the perfect start with a winning-eight on the first end.

Stuart played with John Carr, Peter Mitchell and Gary Bondfield. They were up by 20 shots at games end.

Also winning by 20 shots were Marie Stephenson, John Moore, Michele Bondfield and Brian Byrne. Micki Horton, Dennis Patmore, Ian Smith and Ian Kennedy also won comfortably by 14 shots.

Side two have regained third spot behind Cranbourne and Black Rock, but face an uncertain end to the season as they play both sides above them and fourth place Mordialloc in the final three games. They will be pleased to regain some of the form that they showed early in the season, but will need to continue that form to be sure of playing finals.
