Tyler’s Top 10: Warnie moments

This has to be the hardest edition of Tyler’s Top 10 ever compiled.

Purely because 100 moments were unlucky to miss out on the this listing.

In this week’s edition of Tyler’s Top 10, TYLER LEWIS remembers 10 of the most memorable moments from Shane Warne… on field.

10. Richie Richardson: The West Indies were flying, Richardson and Phil Simmons had settled in for a long day, before Warnie created history. This flipper became instantly famous and he earmarked it later in his life as his best delivery. Warne went on to capture a lazy 7/52 after the dazzling delivery.

9. 8/71 v England: You know it’s a tight list when an eight-for is coming in ninth! Fourth innings pitches and Warnie went together like, well, a dart and Warnie. The Aussies set the Poms 508 for victory in Brisbane in 1994 and while the Poms made a good fist of it, it was always going to be Shane that stole the show. After only 3/39 from 21.2 overs in the first dig, the king of spin collected 8/71 in the fourth innings. He bowled a stupendous 50.2 overs, 22 maidens for 8/71.

8. 1999 World Cup – the biggest of stages: A famous turn of events, where Warne was named man of the match in both the semi and the final. In the tied semi with South Africa, Warnie snared 4/29 from 10 overs and was the key to the important break throughs when the Proteas were 0/48 after 12 overs. In the final Warne again bowled beautifully, capturing 4/33 off nine as the Aussies bowled Pakistan for 132.

7. THE hat-trick: As much a highlight for David Boon as it is for Warnie, what a catch at short leg! As was his love affair with the great colosseum, the legend did it at the MCG.

6. A nightmare debut: A great lesson for all cricketers, sometimes it doesn’t happen for you instantly. Warne was belted in his debut, Ravi Shastri made a double-ton and Warne went for 1/150 in his debut game. But he then turned it around, an unreal insight into the man’s determination and resilience.

5. 99 (not) out: An infamous dismissal when Warnie was deprived of his maiden Test century. Vision appeared later of New Zealand’s Dan Vettori actually being over the line and it being an illegal delivery after Warne was dismissed. A SHOCKING moment in history, but come on, Shane, what are you doing going for the bomb with men out on 99??

4. A golden calendar year: Realistically a record that will probably never be broken. Warne took a scary 94 wickets in a single calendar year in 2005. 40 of those came in one series where he terrorised the Poms.

3. Amazing Adelaide: You’re never out of it when Warnie is in the side. Everyone knows the story, but do the Aussies win if Warnie doesn’t play? It was a rhetorical question, the answer is clearly no.

2. Gatting ball: What is more famous, the delivery, look on Mike Gatting’s face, or the commentary from Richie Benaud. It’s hard to even elaborate on this, it’s too iconic. He doesn’t believe it’s his best ever, but it was voted the ball of the century. Tough luck, Mike, better luck next time.

1. King of his castle, wicket number 700: Good luck catching him! Warnie took off when he went through the gate of Andrew Strauss. Strauss had made his way to 50 before the king of spin knocked him over. Warne then ran more kilometres in celebration than he did his entire career. 89,155 people witnessed the moment on Boxing Day at the MCG in 2006, it really is a surprise the joint didn’t come down…
