GARFIELD GOLF CLUB
There were plenty of golfing options for the punters this week with four rounds of the Easter Cup up for decision Friday through Monday.
On Good Friday Clint Williams won the major grade with a round of 40 points whilst John Gay won the B Grade event on a count back with a round of 38 points.
On Saturday Ron Fielding absolutely lit up the course with a very nice A Grade winning score of 44 points which included an ace on the 14th as well as two birdies playing off his mark of 12.
Single figures are now at the precipice…congratulations Ron.
Clinton Smith won the B Grade event with a round of 40 points whilst Peter Scott won the C Grade event with a score of 38 points.
Nick Lockwood put a nice round together of 42 points to win the D Grade event.
Shane Male had a great round of two under off the stick finishing with a score of 40 points playing off his mark of just two.
A final score of 35 points or better was needed to get a ball down the line.
Tym Davey, our new green keeper, displayed his golfing on-course ability with a round of 36 points playing off his mark of just three.
On Thursday a field of 66 presented with the overall scoring of an average standard.
Peter Johnson won the A Grade event on a count back with a score of 37 points defeating Bob Calderara in the process.
Tony Mafodda, a new member playing well, won the B Grade event with a handicap score of 36 points. Don Stark got the nod for the C Grade event, once again by a count back decision with a score of 37 points defeating Graeme Martin in the process.
Full Easter Cup results will be reported on next week.
The veterans played the Eastern Zone Challenge at Yallourn on the 4 April which comprised 27 players from South Gippsland, 18 players from the Mornington Peninsula, 23 from East Gippsland and finally 38 from West Gippsland.
The winner was South with an average stableford score of 30.9, second was Mornington with 30.8 and finishing third was East with a score of 30.4.
Last was West Gippsland, not far away, with an average of 29.7.
Three players from Garfield attended with the two acquitting themselves reasonably, but the delegate shouldn’t have bothered turning up as he dragged the averages backwards.
On April 11 our course hosted its annual veteran’s day and were fortunate to be blessed with very nice weather.
A field of 82 turned out which included 17 Garfield members of which our delegate, John Scale, redeemed himself with an A Grade winning score of 40 points.
There are a number of people to thank which includes Tony Mafodda, Trevor Burnie and James Grant, whom all helped with the organisation of the day.
Special thanks to Gail, Jill and Kay for their wonderful service in the kitchen and Sue behind the bar.
A very special thanks, also to Leesa Matthews for her tireless work in helping to organise the event and to the Veterans Captain, David Rash, for his nonstop work on the starter sheets.
Without the support of all the above individuals the day would have been chaos, the open lunch was also very well received.
