McDonald on fire with 44 points

It’s not very often that a golfer beats every other player on the course by six shots…but that’s what happened after an extraordinary round of golf by John McDonald at Deep Creek Golf Club on Saturday.

Playing off his handicap of 19, McDonald shot an 83 off the stick to score a mammoth 44 points and win B Grade by that six-shot margin from Tom Marshall (15).

Countbacks were required in A and C Grade, with Colin Maclean (12) winning A Grade with 37 points from runner up Anthony Franzi (12), and Les Jones (23) scored 36 points to win C Grade from runner up Gary Clymo (23).

Down the lines went to John Curtin and Brett Nowlan with 37 points, Harry Elyasie, Graeme Brennan and Shane Wilkinson 36 points, Leon Mateariki and Brenton Hollingworth 35 points, Roger Parker, Theo Van Roy and Jimmy Pari 34 points and Terry Bull, Yvonne Smith and Kougar Lloyd with 33 points.

Nearest the pins went to 2nd Hole: Harry Elyasie (1.87m) and 16th Hole: Rob McCrae (2.60m).

There were two one-shot winners in Wednesday’s stableford competition with Chris McConnell (14) winning A Grade with 37 points, one clear of Phil Barling (14) on 36, while Maddison Selleck (40) had the round of the day, scoring 40 points to win B Grade by a shot from Bill McDonald (23) on 39.

Down the lines went to Gordon Edwards 38 points, Rex Ryan 35, John Roberts, Kevin Sutton and Tony Penney 34, and to David Calderbank, John Curtin, Theo Van Roy, Christopher James, Neville Taylor, Ron Parsons, Jarred Bester, Lyriq Bester, Leon Mateariki, Noel Boyd and Bob Naismith with 32 points.

The Supercomp Front 9 winner was Maddison Selleck with 23 points and nearest the pins went to 2nd Hole: David McMahon (4.70m) and 16th Hole: Chris McConnell (2.70m).

The Women’s Bowl was played in stableford format on Thursday with the Beaconhills team of Suzanne Van Strien, Delanie Lewis and Jenny Chandler winning the event with a combined score of 93 points.

Runner up was Drouin with 84 points, followed by Deep Creek (3) and Traralgon on 77, Deep Creek (2) and Trafalgar 73, Deep Creek (1) 69 and Warragul on 66.

Silver winner was Suzanne Van Strien with 35 points and Bronze winner was Liz Garvey (Deep Creek (3) with 31 points.

Nearest the pins went to…2nd Hole: Ginny Carter (2.10m), 4th Hole: Shirley Roberts (9.02m) and 16th Hole: Cheryl Toyne (0.93m).

The Easter Monday competition was also the third round of the Easter Cup, where the two best scores from Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday were combined to find a winner.

The daily winner was the in-from Glenn Rees (9) who scored 38 points to win via a countback from Tony Penney (22).

Tom Reid and Leon Mateariki with 36 points, Nick Gray and Noel Boyd 35, Stephen Northcott and Chris Dalton 34, and to Steely Mateariki, Kevin Reid, Tom Marshall, Brett Nowlan and Tony Sheahan with 33 points.

Nearest the pin went to Chris Dalton (6.50m) on the second.

The Easter Cup winner for 2022 was Craig Clissold with 76 points, with Noel Boyd 74, Kougar Lloyd and Glenn Rees 73, Leon Mateariki 72, Alex Blanck 71 and Brian Webster, Nick Gray and Brett Nowlan with 70 points not far behind.

Sunday’s stableford winner was Leon Mateariki (12), who scored 39 points for a two-shot win over Daniel Behnane (11).

Down the lines went to Brenton Hollingworth and Alex Blanck 36 points, and Nick Gray and Suzanne Van Strien with 34 points.
