RENOWNED Australian scientist Sir Gustav ‘Gus’ Nossal was the guest of honour at Nossal High School’s official opening last week.
Principal Roger Page showed Sir Gus around the school’s brand new Berwick home – including the mural wall featuring a young Sir Gus and a brief list of his many achievements.
In his opening address, Mr Page said Sir Gus was an icon for the school’s 200 gifted Year 9 students.
“I have the fondest memory of our foundation assembly (held at St Michael’s Church) where Sir Gustav was signing autographs after, like a rock star,” he said.
Education Minister Bronwyn Pike said the Nossal school was Victoria’s third selective entry school.
“The government is committed to providing new schools in Melbourne’s growth corridor, and Nossal High School will provide an academically rich environment for some of our brightest children,” she said.
“Education is the top priority for the government and that’s why we’re providing more pathways for high-performing students.”
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said students at the school would benefit from modern, open-plan learning environments.
“The learning spaces at Nossal High School will allow students to specialise in art, science, information technology and robotics,” Ms Graley said.
“Students at this school will be partnered and supported by Monash University and Chisholm TAFE.
“This unique position will give students more opportunities to excel, grow and learn.”
Nossal High School joins two other select-entry schools in Victoria, Melbourne High School and MacRobertson Girls’ High School.
Next year Suzanne Cory High School will open in Werribee and expand the number of select-entry places for students in Victoria by more than 900.
