TWENTY junior fire-fighters impressed at the 2013 Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) Urban Junior Championships.
Pakenham CFA and Kooweerup CFA entered teams into the event, held in Warrnambool on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 February.
The Kooweerup team took home a second place, third place and a fifth place and the Pakenham team left with two fifth places, but placed within the top 20 in most other events.
“I am pretty impressed with the team,” Pakenham coach Tara Wigfield said.
“Three of the team had never been so it was their first state championships and they really enjoyed it.”
The local champions competed against more than 900 CFA junior volunteers from all over Victoria, and also a team from Esperance, Western Australia.
They competed an two days of events designed to build fitness and practical fire-fighting skills in the young CFA volunteers of the future.
There were 70 teams and around 1000 spectators and supporters.
Eileen Harvey, who helped with the Kooweerup team, said their team only started in 2008 so it was great result.
“They did really well,” she said.
“They were excited just to be getting a place at the state championships.”
A lot of the local competitors got involved in the activity as their parents are fire-fighters, or through general word-of-mouth.
They start training for the championship in September and October and train two nights a week.
Events include a hydrant race, marshalling and events with water.
