A FORMULA 2 race car, one of only three of its kind left in the world, has been stolen.
The car’s trailer has been located by Pakenham police at a house in Officer.
A Wantirna South man was devastated when police informed his father that the car and its trailer were stolen from a storage unit in Knoxfield last Wednesday.
Leading Senior Constable Trudy Neylan says police are desperately trying to find the car, held by its owners for 21 years.
Owner Rohan Carigg said the car had “historical significance in Australia,” and was important to the family.
“I won an Australian championship in that car,” he said.
“It’s very important.”
The car was stolen from Knoxfield between 7.30pm on 19 August and 8.30am on 20 August, and the trailer was found in a driveway along Rix Road, Officer around 1pm on Friday 22 August.
The car is worth around $60,000, and Mr Carigg said he and his father had built it up from the day they got it.
“When we got it, it was pretty dishevelled,” he said.
“Dad restored it twice, and it’s only been in one minor on track collision since then.”
Sen Const Neylan has asked anyone who saw the car being taken away by trailer to contact police.
“It would have needed the same style of trailer or some type of trailer to take the car from the location,” she said.
“It’s not able to be driven on a standard road.”
Mr Carigg said he was not confident the car would be in a good state, but wants it returned.
“Unfortunately I believe it will get damaged,” he said.
“We just want it back so we can move on to the next phase, rebuilding or repairing.
“Anyone with any information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Pakenham Crime Investigation Unit.
