RSL objects to apartment block

BERWICK RSL has objected to plans for a three level, 20 unit apartment block development in Langmore Lane.
In a letter to City of Casey’s Planning manager, RSL secretary George Nicholson said it objected to the proposed development on behalf of its 248 members.
“To propose such a development on a site of less than half an acre with a 22-metre frontage is completely unrealistic for this area in Berwick,” he wrote.
“The RSL is not totally opposed to some development on 21 Langmore Lane.
“It would be reasonable for the development to be in keeping with other developments with the street.
“We would consider supporting a more reasonable proposal.”
Council received a petition with 46 signatures on 20 October, objecting to the plan, first lodged with council on 5 May, which includes 30 car parking spots.
Gary Adams, representing The Body Coprorate at 32 Langmore Lane, said the plans represented a “total change in the character of our once prestigious street”.
“The development will be totally out of character with the area,” he said.
He said it would also create traffic problems, with staff from nearby businesses and visitors to the St John of God Hospital, already parking in Langmore Lane.
“The reduction in car parking requirements is also surely a joke,” he said.
“To even consider a reduction in car parking requirements for this development is totally senseless.”
Langmore Lane residents Peter and Lois Falkner said a reduction in the number of car spaces would create “chaos”.
City of Casey manager Planning Duncan Turner said the application was currently being advertised and once closed, would be considered at a future Planning Committee meeting.
